Angling: Mitchell and Antrobus inseparable as top spot shared

GEORGE Mitchell and Steve Antrobus ran each other close in the Mickle Trafford AC match at Chirk Fishery.

They ended up sharing first, each having caught two rainbows weighing 3-8-0 to bloodworm.

Third was shared between Jack Thompson and Peter Halsey, each with a brace for 3-6-0.

Carl Fletcher took third in Sunday’s Heronbrook Fishery Winter League match.

His 47-6-0 took him two places above Jamie Hughes in fifth with 42-6-0, Steve Carrier with 34-12-0 of carp and Phil Henry with 20-8-0.

Gary Vincent won the Saturday open match at Hampton Springs Fishery with 32-2-0 of carp. He beat Gary Tolley with 28-4-0 and John Cheetham with 22-12-0.

The venue’s Sunday match went to the 33-0-0 carp haul of Jason Wilkinson, again leaving Tolley in second with 26-4-0 and David Whatmough third on 23-6-0.

Bill Bristow topped the Manley AC match on Mouldsworth Lake. Putting 14-8-0 of roach and bream on the scales saw off John Bristow with 13-12-0 of roach and Steve Roxburgh with 8-12-0 of roach and rudd.

Victory was Andy Spencer’s in the silver fish only match at Hampton Springs Fishery. His catch of 22-0-0 held up as Mark Pleaving submitted 21-4-0 and Ray Rigby put on 16-4-0.

Jeff Williams was the only weigher in the Rake and Pikel AC match on a swollen and fast River Weaver. He took small roach weighing 1-0-0 on the marina length of the river.

Steve Openshaw was top rod in the Thursday match at Lingmere Fishery. Taking carp and chub weighing 25-6-0 gave him the edge over Geoff Barker with a mixed 12-4-0 and Dave Randles senior with 11-15-0.

Lingmere’s Saturday match belonged Alan Dewhurst as he took 37-9-0 of carp and pellets to beat Geoff Grantham’s 27-4-0 and Openshaw’s 24-0-0. Geoff Dentith was the winner of Sunday’s Flint AA match on their paper mill pool. Roach weighing 4-1-0 did the trick.

Burton Mere Fishery has now closed. It has been sold to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and will become a nature reserve. No fishing will be allowed.
