Owais Shah cruelly fell two runs short of a hundred after a shower of sixes put England in control of the Champions Trophy contest against South Africa at Centurion.
Shah's 98, terminated by a bat-pad dismissal off spinner Johan Botha, included six clearances of the rope.
His 89-ball effort provided the majority of a 163-run stand with Paul Collingwood, England's highest for any wicket in one-day international cricket for two years.
Collingwood also batted with great fluency as Andrew Strauss' team piled up 231 for four after 40 overs.
