LIVERPOOL have recalled midfielder Jonjo Shelvey from his loan spell at Blackpool in the wake of Lucas Leiva's knee injury.
The Reds are still waiting for confirmation of the extent of the injury Lucas suffered in last night's 2-0 win over Chelsea in the Carling Cup.
However, there are fears the Brazilian could be facing up to six months on the sidelines and that has led to boss Kenny Dalglish calling for Shelvey.
The 19-year-old had impressed during his stay with the Seasiders – netting six goals in 10 appearances.
Talks were at an advanced stage between the two clubs to extend the player's loan beyond the end of December but the Reds have now activated the recall clause for him to return to Anfield with immediate effect.
Blackpool boss Ian Holloway said: “Obviously this is a setback to us as Jonjo has done ever so well in his short time with us.
“We knew that Liverpool had the recall option on him and it was only the unfortunate injury to Lucas that has prompted them to take this course of action.
“I would like to thank Jonjo for his efforts with us and Kenny for allowing him to come to us. We will be in regular contact with Liverpool about trying to bring him back in January should Liverpool's injuries clear up.”
