Shankly book still a hard hitter

THE hard hitting autobiography which Liverpool Football Club tried to ban in 1976 is back in the shops.

‘Shankly: My Story’ was a best seller when it was first released and it sold out again when it was republished in hardback in 2009.

Now to mark the 30th anniversary of Bill Shankly’s untimely death it’s being made available in paperback.

His only authorised autobiography charts the remarkable rise of the ultimate man of the people from a poor Scottish mining village to Reds legend.

Ghost-written by journalist John Roberts it provides in-depth analysis of how he transformed Liverpool from a Second Division club into one of the most feared sides in Europe.

Written in the years after his dramatic resignation in 1974, it also gives an insight into Shankly’s feelings about the club that he felt had turned its back on him.

“It was never my intention to have a complete break with Liverpool, but at the same time I wasn’t going to put my nose in where it wasn’t wanted. Maybe I was an embarrassment to some people.”
