Manchester United FC: SUNDERLAND have stepped up their efforts to land some of Steve Bruce’s transfer targets by agreeing a fee with Manchester United for striker Fraizer Campbell.
It is understood the sum could eventually amount to in excess of £5m for the player.
The 21-year-old could head to Wearside for a medical and to discuss personal terms over the weekend.
Meanwhile, Bruce’s former club Wigan have rejected a bid from Sunderland for midfielder Lee Cattermole.
Sunderland’s bid is undisclosed, although some reports have suggested Cattermole could cost them as much as £7m.
Latics chairman Dave Whelan said: “Lee is not going anywhere. You just cannot replace these kind of players.”
With skipper Dean Whitehead a major target for former Black Cats boss Roy Keane, now at Ipswich, Bruce is keen to land a combative midfielder and knows all about the Stockton-born enforcer who performed so well for England at the European Under-21s Championships this summer.
Bruce has made the acquisition of at least one striker – with Peter Crouch a target – a priority after the club decided not to take up an option on last season’s loan signing Djibril Cisse.
Michael Chopra has left the club for Cardiff and Daryl Murphy has also been linked with Ipswich, leaving just Kenwyne Jones, David Healy and youngster Martyn Waghorn on the books.
