Thomas Hitzlsperger insists he is not happy to sit on the bench until his Everton deal runs out next month.
THOMAS HITZLSPERGER insists he is not happy to simply sit on the bench until his Everton deal runs out next month.
The 30-year-old former German international midfielder has made four appearances for David Moyes’ side since signing on a short term deal in October, but has been left on the bench since Darron Gibson’s return to fitness against Arsenal last month.
Hitzlsperger was primarily recruited as cover for the former Manchester United man who was out for 10 weeks with a thigh tendon problem, but insists he wants to continue competing for a place in the team over the busy Christmas period – especially since fighting back to full fitness from his own injury problems which caused him to be released by Bundesliga club Wolfsburg in the summer.
Marouane Fellaini’s three-game suspension could provide a way back into the side for Hitzlsperger to feature against former club West Ham United at Upton Park on Saturday, and the ex-Hammer hopes that is the case.
He said: “I know where I’ve come from so I’ve learned to be patient but I’m not just happy to sit on the bench all season long. I cant wait for the next game to be playing in and hopefully it’s Saturday.
“I want to improve and be part of this team and start in more games. I’ll be ready and waiting for my chance.
“It’s sort of difficult because I’ve come here to play but I know my role at this club and I’m prepared to be patient.
“I was just pleased to be back playing football after being out for such a long time. I’m glad the manager gave me the opportunity at Everton and I’ve done a fairly good job but we’ve got a very good squad.
“Darron Gibson was brought in by the manager at the start of the year and has done very well since. That’s why I have to be patient. I’ve come on and done my best. I’ve done okay but there’s always room for improvement.
“It’s been so easy since day one. I enjoy every day in training but the main thing is playing and that’s what I want to be doing soon.”
