Ross Barkley back on goal trail for Everton Reserves against Newcastle

SEAMUS COLEMAN and Ross Barkley were on target as Everton reserves won a thrilling contest at Finch Farm.

Alan Stubbs' side had several players with senior experience, including goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, Apostolos Vellios, Coleman and Barkley, while the Magpies fielded a younger side.

Coleman, who was making his come-back from a thigh injury, put Everton ahead inside four minutes with a simple finish after a well-worked move but Dan Taylor levelled with a deflected shot, only for an impressive Magaye Gueye to restore the home side's lead.

Phil Airey equalised before half-time, but Gueye got his second after the restart. Ryan McGorrian grabbed a first reserve team goal for United to make it 3-3, but then Everton's class started to show.

Jose Baxter put them ahead again before Barkley, who is also approaching full fitness, and sub Joao Silva – who has returned from a loan spell in Portugal, added further goals.

EVERTON RES: Hahnemann, Browning, Touray, Forshaw, Duffy, Dier, Coleman (Lundstram 56), Barkley (Heneghan 84), Vellios (Silva 58), Baxter, Gueye. Unused subs: : Davies, Kelly.
