Cricket: John Gibbon’s ton seals cup progress for Tattenhall

DEFEAT in the County League was followed by an excellent cup victory for Tattenhall at the weekend.

On Saturday, Roy Sandford’s team lost by six wickets at home to Warrington in Division Two.

Despite good batting conditions, some wayward shot selection saw the hosts reduced to 28-5 after 19 overs. Rob Mulvihill (23) and Sandford (32no) ensured the innings went the distance, but Tattenhall were all out for 108.

In reply, Mulvihill (2-29) struck twice in his first two overs. But Warrington recovered and eased to 109-4.

The following day, Tattenhall travelled to Tranmere Victoria for a National Village Knockout first round tie.

Opener John Gibbon starred with 139 as the visitors reached 289-6. Tranmere’s reply came up well short at 144-9.

MALPAS drew at home to Stockport in the battle of last season’s two promoted sides on Saturday.

The visitors won the toss and batted first, making 223-7dec (Mark Goldsmith 2-37, Maneeshe Nissanka 2-38).

In reply, opener Keith Ricketts was out for 21, Nalaka Eranda went for 23 and captain Jon Suckley for 25, but Malpas were guided to the draw with some steady batting by Eddie Barlow (29no) and Tom Coates-Harman (33no).

They finished on 174-6 and are unbeaten in their first two County League Division Two fixtures.
