CHESTER’S Lauren Griffiths saw the Ashes slip through her fingers as England women lost the one-off Test Down Under.
Unable to emulate the success of Andrew Strauss’s side, wicketkeeper Griffiths and her team-mates were comfortably beaten by seven wickets in Sydney.
The former Cheshire Boughton Hall player from Guilden Sutton had taken two key catches to dismiss Aussie opener Shelley Nitschke and number three Sarah Elliott cheaply as the hosts were dismissed for 159 in reply to England’s first innings total of 207 at the Bankstown Oval.
However, the tourists could muster only 149 at the second attempt, paving the way for Australia to knock off the 198 runs they needed and regain the Ashes after a six-year gap.
