Cricket: Saughall lack killer blow

FOR the third time in four matches, Saughall were frustrated by stubborn tail-end resistance, this time by Holmes Chapel.

The Chester hosts took first use of a hard, bouncy track in the Division Two clash and lost Martin Huxley early before Ben Salisbury (32) got them back on track.

After a middle-order collapse however Mike Rowson made an important and entertaining cameo for 24 and James Huxley (50) kept his big shots in the locker to anchor the innings at the other end as Saughall were dismissed for 172.

Dipak Jena picked up an early wicket after tea but a 54-run second wicket partnership for Holmes Chapel frustrated Saughall.

Three wickets in quick succession turned the match in their favour but Chapel were able to eke out their innings.

The protected their wickets so well that they gave themselves a chance late on to win the match.

But they timed their charge too late and ended short on 156-8 for a winning draw to Saughall.

At Heaton Mersey Village, table-topping visitors FRODSHAM won by 28 runs.

Frodsham scored 191-8 with Geoff Abram scoring 81 and Matt Williamson 40.

Heaton replied with 163ao.
