Blue Square North: Carl Macauley returns as Vauxhall Motors manager

CARL Macauley has made a surprise return as manager of Vauxhall Motors – just months after standing down from the role.

The 41-year-old quit the Blue Square North outfit in May because he feared he would no longer be able to juggle the demands of management with his day job as an academy coach at Liverpool FC.

But his workload with Liverpool has eased in recent months, so he has been lured back to Rivacre Park by chairman Alan Bartlam.

Macauley replaces Anthony Wright, who will remain on the coaching staff along with his assistant Gary Martindale.

Macauley’s first game back in the Motors hotseat resulted in a 2-1 win over Blyth Spartans on Tuesday.

The rock-bottom hosts were reduced to 10 men after just five minutes when goalkeeper David Knight was sent off for handling outside the box.

But it was not until nine minutes from time, when Leighton McGivern scored his second goal of the game and 12th of the season, that the visitors made their advantage count.

Bartlam hopes Macauley’s return will signal an upturn in results.

He said: “We’re delighted to have Carl back at the club.

“Anthony’s man management was first class and the squad he assembled is a very talented one, but we were just missing that little something which meant we weren’t getting results.

“We’re pleased that Carl is back and he’ll be working with Anthony and Gary, so they’re back in the old groove really.”

Macauley, whose first spell as Vauxhall manager lasted five and a half years, returned to the club last Thursday and watched Saturday’s 1-1 home draw with Droylsden from the stands.

Motors, who are 17th in the table, make the trip to fellow strugglers Workington this Saturday (3pm).
