Worcester City 2 Vauxhall Motors 0
MOTORS are still searching for their first point – and first goal – of the new Blue Square North season after a frustrating loss at St George’s Lane on Monday.
Having gone down 2-0 at home to Gloucester City in Saturday’s opener, boss Anthony Wright made three changes to his side – but still ended up on the receiving end of a two-goal setback.
Worcester took the lead after just 10 minutes. Vauxhall lost possession in the centre of the pitch and the home side broke forward with the ball finding Danny Edwards on the left wing.
His low cross into the area found midfielder Matt Birley, who took one touch then fired the ball beyond Scott Tynan.
The second goal for Worcester came via the penalty spot on 67 minutes after a shot from outside the area struck the hand of Motors’ defender Michael Jackson. Luke Corbett stepped up and drilled the resulting spot-kick past Tynan.
Motors had a 90th-minute penalty appeal turned down when Craig Mahon was bundled over.
The referee hastily blew for full-time instead.
The defeat came hot on the heels of Saturday’s loss to Gloucester, who took maximum points at Rivacre Park thanks to strikes from Darren Edwards and Steve Davies.
The away side took the lead after 25 minutes when a high, looping ball into the penalty box was not properly cleared and striker Edwards hooked the ball over his shoulder from 10 yards out.
The second goal came five minutes after the half-time break when Davies cut inside from the left wing and burst into the penalty area before hitting a low drive past Tynan from six yards.
Next up for Motors is a trip to Boston United this Saturday (3pm), followed by a home match against Altrincham next Tuesday (7.45pm).
