Gainsborough Trinity 2 Vauxhall Motors 0
MOTORS’ drive for Blue Square North survival stalled at Northolme on Tuesday.
The struggling Motormen, who had taken an encouraging 1-1 draw from Droylsden on Saturday thanks to a Chris Lane strike, battled hard throughout a tense first half, without creating many scoring opportunities.
After the break, however, it was hosts Trinity that carried the greatest threat and on 62 minutes Nathan Peat nudged them ahead with a shot from outside the area.
It proved a sucker-punch to Motors as three minutes later Gainsborough, managed by former Aston Villa, Wrexham and Tranmere boss Brian Little, doubled their lead when Mark Greaves headed home.
The Motormen could find no way back and the defeat leaves them rooted to the bottom of the league, eight points from safety, having played three more games than rival strugglers Harrogate Town and Gainsborough.
This Saturday, Vauxhall host Hyde United (3pm) and Cheshire rivals Northwich Vics are the visitors to Rivacre Park on Tuesday (7.45pm).
