Blue Square North: Carl Macauley demands Vauxhall Motors show more desire after double defeat
THE pressure increased on struggling Vauxhall Motors and their boss Carl Macauley on Tuesday as they crashed to a 5-1 defeat at AFC Telford United.
The heavy loss keeps Motors firmly rooted to the bottom of Blue Square North and came hot on the heels of their 5-0 home beating by Redditch United on Saturday.
While it remains tight at the foot of the table, with only a handful of points separating safety from the drop spots, if Macauley’s side cannot find a winning formula soon they face relegation to the UniBond Premier Division – a far cry from last season’s push for the play-offs.
Skipper Josh Wilson got their only goal against Telford when he equalised shortly after Danny Carey-Bertram gave the hosts a 19th-minute lead.
But five minutes later the Bucks were ahead again, Carey-Bertram grabbing the second of his four for the night. Andy Brown also scored to complete a nightmare few days for Motors.
And things are not going to get any easier for the Rivacre Park outfit as they travel to high-flying Eastwood Town on Saturday (3pm) before entertaining Ilkeston Town on Tuesday (7.45pm).
Macauley wants to see a lot more from his players, starting at Eastwood.
“The players let themselves down, the club down and most importantly the supporters down on Saturday,” he said.
“I brought the players together, I had my say and the assistant manager had his, but once they go over that white line, it’s up to them.
“Every game is a big game. Eastwood will not be easy, at this stage of the season they are up there for a reason, but we have to go out there and show a lot more fight.
“We had a phenomenal season last year but then lost half of the squad in the summer and there is nothing we can do about that.
“I have brought in these players because I feel they are good enough to keep us up. We have been involved in relegation battles before and survived and I think we can this time.
“But the pressure is on. We are running out of games and we need results.
“We have had good results recently but they have been draws, not wins.
“These players need to dig deep and produce performances.”
