Welsh Premier League: Airbus UK Broughton miss chance to break club record

AIRBUS UK Broughton’s hopes of making it a club record four Welsh Premier League wins on the run were dashed on Friday night.

The Wingmakers went down to a 1-0 home defeat to Bala Town although they would have earned a deserved point had it not been for a late wonder save from Leon Bimpson to deny Paul McManus.

McManus has found it hard to break into Craig Harrison’s first XI so far this season, but the former Chester City striker will be pushing hard for a place in the starting line-up for Sunday’s trip to title-chasing Neath (2.30pm) given his impressive performance off the bench against Bala.

Up until McManus’ 65th-minute arrival, Airbus had found it near on impossible to break down the resolute visitors, who had gone closest to opening the scoring in the first half when Marc Griffiths hit the post.

McManus blazed over from just inside the box before Carl Owen wasted an equally good opportunity. And the hosts were made to pay when John Toner tapped-in in the 85th minute.

The eighth-placed Wingmakers will stay overnight in South Wales before facing Neath, giving them the chance to take in Saturday’s Championship clash between Swansea City and Nottingham Forest.

One Airbus player who will definitely not feature on Sunday is Matty Cook. The ex-Wales Under 19s has fractured his fibula in his left leg and will be out for up to three months.
