TWO teams in buoyant mood kicked off this match, but one left deflated as Vics maintained their outside hopes of promotion.

The opening exchanges were controlled by Vics, with Al Moore’s header well saved while Steve Wright’s dipping volley flashed over the bar.

Henry Buckley’s attempted flick header was well anticipated by the Sports keeper whilst Andy Clacher fired wide on the run.

The only goal of the game arrived on 36 minutes, Wright delivering a perfect corner to pick out Alex Rowntree’s run.

Rowntree volleyed the ball past the helpless Grappenhall keeper.

After the interval Grappenhall used the swirling, windy conditions to their advantage.

Though they struggled to create chances, their never say die attitude almost earned them a share of the points as a last minute corner for Vics was cleared into the Vics half.

Grappenhall broke but the ball eventually trickled wide.

While promotion is unlikely, Vics can pressure the top sides if they win their last nine games.
