Ex-England ace helps prize night to glitter

FORMER England international striker David Johnson, one of the few men to have played for Liverpool and Everton, guested at Helsby’s annual presentation night and sportsman’s dinner.

Johnson delighted a packed house with stories from his glittering career and was among the first to acknowledge the scoring feats of Helsby first teamer Nick Askey.

Askey picked up a special award for topping a century of goals for Helsby's first team over the last four seasons.

Nick, 23, from Kingsley, came through the Helsby youth ranks to notch 19 goals in 2004/5, 28 in 2005/6, 31 in 2006/7 and a further 31 in the season just ended.

Helsby’s senior players picked up medals and trophies. First-team winners were Gaz Gerrard (player of the season), Askey (players’ player and top scorer), Jeff Enamu (manager’s player) and Kevin Ward (committee’s player).

Mark Richards topped the second team polls for both club and players’ PoY.

The manager’s award went to Mark Richards with Daz Sanders the manager’s choice, Steve Hussin the committee’s PoY and Lee Banner leading marksman.

Helsby will launch a Saturday-morning under 12s team (school Year 7) next season. For further information, contact Paul Nicholls on 01928 725077.
