Athletics: Pupils reach new heights at Chester and District Schools AA Championships
RECORDS were sent tumbling at Tuesday’s Chester and District Schools AA Championships.
Despite having to dodge some heavy rain showers at Deeside Stadium in Connah’s Quay, the city’s best young track and field athletes were still able produce excellent displays in the tricky conditions.
Eight new records were set, while two were equalled.
In the Year 8 girls category, Amy Hinchley (Tarporley High) clocked five minutes and 11 seconds to win the 1,500m, while newly-crowned English schools champion Amy Williams bagged two records.
The Queen’s School pupil set a new best of 11.78 seconds in the hurdles and leapt 5.48m in the long jump.
In the intermediate girls section, Tessa McCormick (Upton High) triumphed in the 1,500m in 5:05, while Bishops’ High’s Kelly Baker threw 10.77 in the shot.
Upton High’s Michael Bailiff won the intermediate boys high jump in 1.90m, while a pair of records were broken in the Year 9 boys heats – by Ross McCormick (Abbey Gate College) in the hurdles (11.34secs) and Abbey Gate relay team (47.94secs).
Two existing records were also equalled – by the Year 8 boys relay team from Chester Catholic High (51.6secs) and Queen’s Park High’s Jordan Knox in the 100m (11.4secs).
