RECORDS tumbled when athletes went head-to-head for track and field glory on Tuesday.
Wrexham’s Queensway International Stadium was the venue for the Chester and District Schools Athletics Association Championships, which were contested by hundreds of pupils from 11 different schools.
In the boys section, new championship records were set by Year 8 pupils Matthew Sheen of Tarporley High in the 1,500m (4.44mins) and Tom Donald of Abbey Gate in the 200m (24.81secs). Year 9 student Cameron Clark of Christleton High was a record-breaker in the javelin (43.13m).
In the girls competition Kelly Baker of Bishops’ High claimed a new record in the shot (11.30m) and fellow Year 9 competitor Aby Prothero of The Queen’s School equalled the 75m hurdles record (11.90secs).
Upton High School won two of the six group titles on offer, finishing top of the points table in the Year 8 and inter girls sections.
Christleton High were also winners in two groups – Year 9 and inter boys – while Tarporley High were crowned Year 8 boys champions and The Queen’s School topped the Year 9 girls standings.
Organiser Claire Sumner, of The King’s School, said: “The weather was great and the competitors all competed in a fantastic manner. The event went smoothly and on time.”
