Your Champions 2011: Worker who provides support for families of Dale Barracks soldiers nominated for award

A NEWTON woman who provides a vital support service for families of Dale Barracks soldiers has been put forward for Champion of the Year.

Alison Eagles, 37, is community development worker at the Liverpool Road barracks.

She is responsible for providing social activities, clubs and outings for wives and children of serving soldiers – who are often based miles from their friends and families.

Alison said: “I must admit I do love my job. I get to work with both the children and the parents and you get to see the whole family,” said Alison.

“The good thing about it is you can put so much into it.”

Since taking up the post three-and-a-half years ago, Alison has also refurbished the community centre for families and provided a quiet room for children who wish to talk in private.

Alison was nominated by friend and former Your Champions nominee Margaret McKeegan.

Margaret said: “The way she dedicates her time and efforts is outstanding.

“This is a vital service and gives mothers a break when they have no-one else, knowing the children are entertained and safe.

“It would be a great honour if she was recognised for excellent work.”
