Boy dies after being hit by train

A teenage boy died after falling from a bridge onto a railway track and being hit by a train.

British Transport Police (BTP) said the 14-year-old fell through overhead electrical wires on the railway line near Hillington West station in Glasgow.

He was hit by the 4.55pm Glasgow to Ardrossan Harbour train after the driver was unable to stop in time.

Police and fire crews attended and all trains in the area were temporarily suspended.

The death of the boy, who thought to be local and is said to have been with friends when he fell, is being treated as unexplained as further investigations are carried out.

A BTP spokeswoman said: "The driver of the train was travelling at 75mph, saw a person on the track in front of him and applied the emergency brake but was unable to stop in time."
