Forced marriage GP's court victory

A High Court judge has granted orders preventing a doctor from being removed from the UK without her consent following her forced marriage in Bangladesh.

Humayra Abedin, 32, who lives in east London, returned to Britain on Tuesday after being held captive by her parents for four months.

She said she had been tricked into going to Bangladesh and, while there, they chose a man for her to marry without her consent.

Dr Abedin was eventually freed by the courts in Bangladesh.

The High Court in London issued an order while she was still in captivity on December 5 under the new Forced Marriage Act - legislation which allows British courts to prevent anyone being forced into marriage.

Dr Abedin was present at the High Court.

Mr Justice Coleridge said: "I shall grant further orders to protect Dr Abedin and prevent her being removed from this country again without her consent."
