Have you ever tried to work out a budget? When money is tight, the sensible thing to do is make a list of all of your outgoings and all the money you make and see where you can make cost savings.

If you do this you may decide that you could save some money on your mobile phone contract. Perhaps you could cut down on how much you spend eating out. And maybe if you cut your monthly clothing allowance, you could save a small fortune.

But how often do you think about getting cheaper car insurance? Too often we think that with financial products such as car insurance, we should stick with the product we have to save fuss.

We may have been advised to take the product by our lender or bank and we automatically assume this is the best option for us. But that is not always the case.

If your lender or bank has offered you a car insurance product, it is likely this product comes via their brand or a brand they are affiliated with. Therefore while it may be an ‘ok’ deal it is unlikely to be the best deal available to you on the market.

If you want to find the best product available to suit your needs, you need to do a little bit of research across the market.

The easiest way to do this is to use the internet and, more specifically, price comparison websites. These sites contain details of most of the car insurance (and other financial) products available on the market.

As the user, all you have to do is log on to the website and input your personal details. The site will then present you with details of what products are available to you.

The site should be able to offer you some great deals but it is important to remember that not all car insurance on the market will be featured on price comparison websites. Some insurance companies prefer to only offer their products direct, therefore, if you want to get a true picture of the market you should also do your own research.

Have a look online and see what individual company websites offer. You should also ask people you know what products and providers they use. Find out if they are happy with their provider and whether they would recommend them.

You may be looking at ways to save money each month but don’t discount searching around for better car insurance. A cheaper deal could help you make considerable savings each month. It may take a little time and effort to find but it will be worth it when you notice the extra money in you bank account each week!
