Cheshire West and Chester Council accused of arrogant behaviour

A UNION representative is accusing the Tory-led council of arrogance for refusing to offer ‘a single extra penny’ to solve a dispute.

Unison is balloting members over industrial action after Cheshire West and Chester Council imposed new terms and conditions to harmonise contracts inherited from the four legacy authorities.

Among the changes, which will save £3.9m a year, are a reduction in mileage rates and premium payments for weekend working.

Unison assistant branch secretary Ray McHale said the union had reluctantly suggested a ‘compromise’ but to no avail.

He said: “Today we got the answer – a massive smack in the face – the council’s staffing committee would offer nothing!

“The message is very clear to Unison members now – either we fight or they grind us into the dirt.

“It looks like only when they see industrial action is going to happen will these arrogant Tory councillors start talking.”

A council spokesman said: “The arguments have been well aired and as a result 96% (8,675) members of staff have signed the terms and conditions.”
