Modest Meryl from Blacon hailed as a community champion

MERYL Jones from Blacon has been named as Principality Chester branch’s local community hero.

She was awarded a prize of £500 in recognition of her work by Pat Cluskey, CEO of Chester FC, at the branch’s official unmasking ceremony.

Meryl was nominated by Susan Quantrill from Chester for her devoted work in the community of Blacon. She goes above and beyond to help her fellow residents by running errands for people who are less able than herself, she also takes people to and from hospital and doctors appointments.

Since the cutbacks in community projects in Blacon, Meryl has taken an active role, giving up her own time to continue the running of these local projects.

Mrs Quantrill described Mrs Jones as: “A genuine local hero who is always willing to give up her own time to help others in her community. Nothing is too much trouble for her, a very dear friend to all who know her.”

Pat Cluskey said: “It is an honour to meet someone who does so much for their community. I have heard so much about you and the hard work and commitment you give to the community of Blacon.

“It comes with a big thank you from the community of Blacon and myself and it gives me great pleasure to present this cheque to a lady who truly deserves it and you really are a hero.”

Meryl said: “I feel very overwhelmed. I don’t see myself as a hero, just somebody who will help others where I can.”

Everyone who made a nomination for a local hero in branch was entered into a draw to win £100. The prize draw winner for Chester branch was Tessa Keegan.
