CRITICS of the ‘Sainsbury’s roundabout’ in Boughton Heath are being offered a £50 charity prize to come up with an appropriate nickname.
Work to ease congestion at the roundabout has caused endless queues of traffic, blocking residential areas and forcing businesses to the brink of bankruptcy.
After suffering the effects of the roadworks, Maxiflow in Whitchurch Road has called for a change to the ‘Hamburger Roundabout’ nickname, saying the little hills are ‘unrecognisable as a roundabout’.
A week after work finished on the controversial roundabout, staff at the family-owned Maxiflow offices launched a quirky online competition in a bid to lighten the mood.
Simon Diamond of Maxiflow Ltd said residents and workers have been coming up with some inventive names for the roundabout. They include:
The Big Mac – One resident said: “Looks great in the pictures. Takes ages to make but leaves you feeling lethargic and late for work.”
Pitch and Putt – An ideal location for a new sporting facility.
Teletubby Land – A new home for children’s television characters Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po.
New Hobbiton – The small, hairy- legged Hobbits from The Lord of the Rings could quite easily mistake the roundabout for The Shire.
Mr Diamond said: “We are very close to the roundabout and we have felt all the effects of the ongoing traffic problems, including being stuck in day after day.
“Many people have been outraged by the roadworks and the new system, so this is basically a way of getting rid of the tension and work through it in a fun way.”
Mr Diamond added: “What is the point of new pint-size rolling hillocks?
“They’re too tall to see over from your car or van, meaning the removal of the trees because they ‘obstructed drivers’ vision’ was largely pointless.
“They’re too small and uneven for attractive new features such as art installations, so we decided to come up with reasons for the hills.
“The roundabout has generated a lot of anger and we think something like this could help people lighten up.”
