A Chester mother who’s son died in the Hillsborough disaster has vowed to carry on fighting for the truth

THE mother of a teenager who died at Hillsborough has vowed not to stop fighting until the whole of the ‘horrific truth comes out’.

For more than 20 years Anne Williams, of Walton Place, Blacon, has campaigned tirelessly for justice after her 15-year-old son Kevin never returned home from the ill-fated football match 22 years ago.

Now after politicians promised to reveal all government documents relating to the tragedy, the mother-of-two has vowed that whatever happens she will not stop fighting until she gets a fresh inquest into her son’s death.

“I will always want him back, there are still days that I cry for him, but there are still some families who do not know what happened to their children, and this will give them some peace,” said Anne.

“We want to clear their names. The families have been through hell, we had to deal with the grief and the fans being blamed and years of unanswered questions.

“There is no way any of them will go back on their word now, so the truth will come out and we will have some peace.”

On Monday (October 17) Anne, 59, joined hundreds of campaigners and victims’ families and friends to watch as MPs debated the Hillsborough disaster in the House of Commons.

Anne said that after years of campaigning the debate offered a ray of hope for the families, some of which would never fully know what happened to their loved-ones.

“In those four hours so much came out that had been hidden for years, all of the things we have been campaigning for. I couldn’t wait for the next MP to speak, but it was very emotional for everyone,” said Anne.

“When the whole truth comes out, as it is leaking out little by little at the moment, people will realise how horrific Hillsborough was.

“We will always have that pain and loss, and we will always have to live with the loss but if we can get the truth and get names cleared perhaps we can get a bit of peace finally.”

Anne, who launched the charity For Justice, born from campaign group Hope for Hillsborough, to raise money for legal funds so she could get a fresh inquest into her son’s death, said that she is waiting for the documents to be released before trying to get Kevin’s death certificate changed.

“The original inquest into Kevin’s death said it was an accident, but Kevin would be alive today if he had got oxygen,” said Ann, who spent two years tracking down Steve Hart, one of the men who carried her son’s stricken body across the pitch on a makeshift stretcher.

“I want his death certificate changed so that it tells the truth. I will not give up, it was not an accident it was neglect or manslaughter.

“Whatever happens next, when the whole truth comes out, people are going to be horrified.”
