Tarporley golf club apologises to Liverpool golfer for branding his trousers ‘inappropriate’

A TARPORLEY golf venue has apologised for ordering a player to cover up his eye-catching Union Jack trousers.

Craig Warren, from Netherton, Liverpool, says a member of staff at Macdonald Portal Golf and Country Club told him that his £200 trousers would ‘distract and offend’ other golfers.

The club has since apologised to Mr Warren for their fairway fashion faux pas and have invited him back with the assurance his trousers will be more than welcome.

The 47-year-old flooring contractor said: “I couldn’t believe it. We’d visited for the Captain’s Day and it ruined the whole thing for me.

“The starter told me to put on my rain trousers and when I refused said my trousers were ‘inappropriate’ and I shouldn’t wear them next time. I played half the round then went in and got changed.”

Mr Warren, a member of Stockbridge Village Golf Society who play at Hoylake, added: “I’ve played golf in Spain, Portugal, the USA and other countries and always worn these trousers.

“We often play in Scotland and I wear a pair up there, and people come up and shake my hand, they love it.”

Sasha Cauwels-Wigan, general manager of the Macdonald Portal Hotel Golf & Spa, said: “Providing the highest standards of customer service is always our top priority. We have since spoken to Mr Warren and expressed our regret at this incident.

“On this occasion we have spoken to the member of staff involved to resolve this matter and ensure it doesn’t happen again.

“We can only apologise for any inconvenience caused.

“We have offered Mr Warren a complimentary golf and spa break at the resort and we hope to welcome him back in the future.”
