Water Tower Street in Chester to close to allow for City Walls repairs

WATER Tower Street in Chester city centre is to be closed to traffic from Monday so a short section of the Walls can have remedial work carried out.

Cheshire West and Chester Council, in partnership with Gifford, has been monitoring a section of the walls over the past 12 months for movement near a staircase leading up to the City Walls.

Water Tower Street will now close at its junction with Northgate Street.

Cllr Lynn Riley, executive member for community and environment said: “We really want to minimise the disruption that these works may cause but a short section of the Walls will need to be propped.

“We need to do a full investigation and undertake remedial work in order to maintain the safety of the section close to some steps.

“Access to parking bays and properties will not be affected.”

Cllr Riley added: “Pedestrian access along Water Tower Street will be maintained during the closure and there will be a diversion route for traffic.

“People walking along the Walls will use steps near Nicholas Street bridge, walk along Water Tower Street and rejoin the Walls in Northgate Street.

“At this moment in time it is unclear how long the work will take but obviously great care will be taken on this historic site.”

This work is separate to a project which began last week to restore Morgan’s Mount in Water Tower Street.
