THE Conservatives are still in control of Cheshire West and Chester Council but with a reduced majority after Labour more than doubled their seats in the local elections.
The Tories' 38 majority has been cut to nine, which council leader Mike Jones says is because the collapsed Lib Dem vote transferred to Labour.
Cllr Jones said: "We will have to be very disciplined as a group. It's very exciting. We intend to continue to reduce the costs of the council while protecting front line services."
He said tackling waste would free up cash to spend on improving services including sports facilities across the borough.
Cllr Jones said a decision would be made on the location of Chester's proposed new theatre this summer and he hopes a consultation will begin this year on the stalled Northgate Development.
The Labour group has increased from 13 to 32 while Lib Dem group has been cut from four just one in the guise of Hoole councillor Bob Thompson.
Labour leader Cllr Derek Bateman said: "We have not got control but we will have 32 members and will be able to have more power to our elbow in negotiations."
He said there was a wealth of new talent in his group including teenager Amy Mercer-Bailey who has been elected to serve a Northwich ward at the tender age of 19 making her the youngest member of the council.
NEW COMPOSITION OF CHESHIRE WEST & CHESTER COUNCIL:
Conservative: 42
Labour: 32
Liberal Democrat: 1
Previous composition:
Conservative: 55
Labour: 13
Liberal Democrat: 4
72 seats were contested in 2008. 75 have been contested in 2011 as a result of boundary changes and the creation of new wards.
