West Cheshire College hairdressing students win a place at regional awards ceremony

TALENTED hairdressing students from West Cheshire College are celebrating after winning four individual awards at the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists North West competition in Blackpool.

Karen Morgan was awarded first place in First Year Blow Wave; Amy Jones came second in the Level 3 Cut and Blow; while Stephanie Cookson and Michelle Nottingham both achieved third place in the Level 3 Skills Challenge and Afro Caribbean categories respectively.

In their first ever entry into the competition, which took place at Blackpool Winter Gardens, the college also placed fourth overall out of the 21 colleges that took part.

The event was the first of seven regional competitions which will see the top three students from each category go on to battle it out at the national competition at Blackpool Winter Gardens this month.

The college also achieved fourth place for a team event based on the theme Night at the Theatre.

Students Georgina Edwards, Laura Jones, Clare Carty, Lyndell Jones, Naomi Mullins and Hannah Mcdonald from Level 2 Hairdressing recreated the looks from the Rocky Horror Picture Show - creating the hair, make-up and costumes and putting together a two minute dance routine to show off their creations.

Two other teams of six also took part, creating looks from Priscilla Queen of the Desert and the masquerade ball from The Phantom of the Opera.

Hairdressing tutor at the college, Lesley Durham, said: “I’m really proud of all the students who took part in the competition. Everyone worked extremely hard and they really pulled together as a team.

“Our students work to a really high standard day in and day out and this competition was a great opportunity for their talent and creativity to be recognised by a wider audience.

“We are thrilled to have four girls reach the final, especially since this is our first year entering the competition.”
