Acresfield Primary School in Upton celebrates World Book Day

ACRESFIELD Primary School in Upton celebrated World Book Day with great pizzazz.

As part of World Book Day, staff and pupils of Acresfield Primary came to school dressed as their favourite literary characters, in support of the Community HEART campaign.

Community HEART (Health Education And Reconstruction Training) is a Manchester-based charity that was set up in 1995 to help support poverty-stricken African countries.

Teaching assistant Diane Hutchinson (who came dressed as Captain Underpants), said the day was fantastic.

The HEART Campaign was chosen because it was something different and its ‘Third Million Book and ten pence' appeal, which aims to fill the libraries of African schools with books, was something that fitted well with the literary theme of the day.

Books are something we take for granted in Britain, whereas in Africa they can mean the difference between a child learning to read and write.

Acresfield collected 1,000 books for the charity from pupils and unwanted books in their own library. Pupils who dressed up were asked to donate 10p, raising £60 which will go towards the cost of shipping the books to Africa.
