Private cash to fund conference centre for Chester?

PRIVATE companies appear willing to fund Chester’s new theatre and convention centre.

Barnsley-based Brook Group has just lodged plans for a 466-seat theatre at its Odeon building, together with bars and restaurants.

And a consultants’ report for Cheshire West and Chester Council says the racecourse “envisages that they would be able to develop and operate the facility (a conference centre) without public sector intervention” next to its hotel.

Richard Thomas, chief executive of Chester Race Company, says of his own convention centre plan: “It’s something we have started to look at, no more than that.”

Cllr Richard Short, executive member for culture, said Brook’s scheme - which would include either a theatre or a cinema - did not have enough seats but confirmed there was dialogue with the company.

He said: “We are looking with interest at Brook’s proposals. We would be stupid if we didn’t.”

He understands the Race Company considered the convention centre idea some time ago but it was rejected by the directors.

A council spokesman stressed private sector investment would be sought towards both its projects.
