Chester schoolgirl’s diamond design is fit for a Queen

A CHESTER schoolgirl has earned her place in the history books by designing the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee emblem.

Katherine Dewar, 10, of Stanton Drive, Upton came up with the winning design as part of a competition on television show Blue Peter.

She said: “They phoned my mum and told her I had won. I was really excited!

“I had to go to the Blue Peter studio and meet the presenters, and I made a film about it too. All the presenters were really nice. It was really cool.”

Katherine and her seven-year-old sister Eleanor, who attend Upton Heath Primary School, both entered the contest.

Mum Deborah said: “I sent them both off but didn’t notice that Katherine had made a spelling mistake.

“Thankfully, they were able to correct this on the computer, otherwise it would have been a diamound jubilee!

“We had to take her to London last week to do some filming and we went again this week to the studio, which was really exciting for her.”

Blue Peter presenter Barney Harwood was on the judging panel, as well as branding expert Martin Lambie-Nairn and children's book illustrators Tony Ross, Nick Sharratt and Emma Chichester-Clark.

A ten-year old girl is the proud designer of the Queen's official 2012 Diamond Jubilee emblem, following a nationwide competition.

Katherine’s design was chosen from 35,000 entries and features a crown poised above the Union Jack alongside columns of diamonds.

The design will be featured on a range of merchandise from flags and posters to tea towels and plates.

As well as receiving the coveted Blue Peter badge, Katherine and her family are among the top 30 entrants to have been invited to a celebrity garden party with the Queen at Buckingham Palace in the summer.
