A professional magician from Clutton offers magic lessons
A MAGICIAN who showed off his skills to revellers in Blackpool is now teaching the tricks of his trade to people in Cheshire.
John Holt’s interest in magic began as a young child when he was given a magic set.
“I just absolutely loved it, and learnt increasing numbers of tricks to show off to my family and friends. It was really just a hobby for me when I was younger.”
It was when John, of Barton Road, Clutton, started working as a croupier in a casino in Blackpool that he started thinking about becoming a professional.
“I was learning from the other croupiers and talking to them. They were teaching me some new tricks and I decided I could either stay and use my tricks in the casino, or earn some money by performing and showing people what I could do.”
John moved on from the casino and, in addition to working full time in mental health social care, he would perform his magic at weddings, parties bars and restaurants.
John said: “I did do performances in front of people on a stage, but I much preferred going from table to table and showing people the tricks up close.”
Around a year ago John moved with his partner Beth, to Clutton.
“We decided to relocate to the Cheshire countryside and since the move I have been a stay-at-home dad to my two children.”
Now John, 35, a member of Manchester Circle of Magicians has decided to pass on his skills by offering people lessons.
“I’ve always wanted to teach people close up magic and what better time than the start of a new year?
“People always make the same old resolutions, lose weight and learn a language. I thought it would be great if people learnt something that was fun, something they could use to show their friends, something that was different.
“With prime time shows like ŠPenn and Teller’s Fool Us and The Magicians on every week, magic has never been so much in the public eye and so popular.”
John is hoping to teach small groups or hold one on one sessions.
He said he will teach people at home, or will travel to them.
He said: “The lessons will be really fun, the magic I teach is all about perception and relatively easy, but looks good.”
