Upton Westlea in top 100 of primary schools

A CHESTER primary school has been congratulated by the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove for its excellent Sats results.

Upton Westlea Primary School, Weston Grove, was identified as being in the top 100 of primary schools for its Key Stage 2 results in maths and English, with a 100% of pupils achieving at least level 4, with ‘excellent rates of progress’.

Head teacher Chris Jackson, who has been in post at the school for 17 years, said the success was down to consistency.

“The staff all work very hard and we have lots of school clubs, including homework clubs,” she said.

“The children enjoy learning, which helps enormously.”

The school also achieved 57% at level 5 for English and science and 47% at level 5 for maths.

A boycott by the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) and the National Union of Teachers (NUT) last year meant that out of 15,515 schools, 4,005 did not administer the tests.

This means that about 600,000 10 and 11-year-olds were due to take the national tests in English and maths in May, but only 420,000 pupils sat them.
