A CHESTER man has been named as the Royal Australian Navy Submariner of the Year 2010.
David Reid, 53, a former Kingsway High pupil who now lives in Perth, Western Australia, was honoured by the Submarine Force Commander of the Australian Navy.
He joined the British Navy when he left school at 16. He is now a Lieutenant Commander.
His mother, Joan Kemball, still lives in the city and is quite rightly very proud of her son’s achievements.
She said: “He has done a lot of work to do with submarine safety.
“He called me from Australia to tell me about it just before Christmas but I couldn’t really take it all in!
“He sent me a copy of the certificate so I could see for myself. It’s wonderful.”
The award is bestowed annually to the submarine qualified sailor or officer whose exceptional performance, dedication to duty and exemplary navy and submarine values makes them a stand out from all the other sub mariners.
David’s certificate spells out the reasons for his commendation and praised him for his “personable and approachable nature”.
It reads: “An irrefutable leader, motivator and mentor, your achievements and contributions are far more reacting then just the Submarine Force.
“You have served with distinction during your postings as a Marine Engineering Officer on board HMAS Farncomb and then HMAS Collins. You have demonstrated superior professional skills in all endeavours.
“You are an exceptional officer and a superb role model for your subordinates to follow.
“Your leadership, dedication, professionalism and values are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Royal Australian Navy and Submarine Service.”
