Chester soldier returns to meet newborn son

FIGHTING in the battle of Babaji, expectant father Private Sam Hopwood was also waiting for news on his pregnant partner Nicci’s impending birth.

The 21-year-old former St David’s High School student of Wellington Road, Broughton – experiencing his first tour of duty – returned home in time for son Isaac’s birth just weeks ago.

“Being a father changed my perspective, it’s always in the back of your mind and I just wanted to get home and see him and my family,” said Sam.

“I just concentrated on getting the job done.

“It was a mess and we had a few hairy moments.

“It’s just a job when you’re out there but it’s nice to know that so many people care and appreciate what you do.”
