A MISTAKEN motorist alerted the fire service to a lorry he claimed was on fire and driving around Chester.
Unfortunately, the lorry in question was a Highways Agency vehicle used for road markings - complete with a smoking vat of asphalt mounted on the back.
Fire crews searched around the city centre for the offending vehicle before discovering the truth.
A spokesman said. “We were essentially chasing a smoking lorry around Chester that turned out not to be on fire after all. It was a bit of a red herring.”
