Mickle Trafford villagers dress St Plegmund’s Well

VILLAGERS in Mickle Trafford celebrated an ancient summer custom on Sunday.

St Plegmund’s Well in Plemstall Lane was ‘dressed’ with natural materials to celebrate 21 years of the Hospice of the Good Shepherd in nearby Backford.

The City of Chester Band led a parade of Scouts, Guides and Rainbows from St Peter’s Church to the well for the ceremony.

The well was blessed by Rev Paul Taylor, of Mickle Trafford Methodist Church, and Rev Mark Hart, of St Peter's Church.

Well-dressing is believed to have originated during the time of the Black Death when people gave thanks for the purity of the water drawn from certain wells.
