Edwardian week to celebrate Helsby Hillside Primary School’s centenary

CHILDREN from Helsby Hillside Primary School stepped back in time to the turn of the 20th Century with an Edwardian week.

The Bates Lane school held a week of events including a spring fayre, an Edwardian day – where former pupils joined the current children and staff dressing up in period clothing dating to when the school was established – and a special celebration assembly.

Headteacher Craig Richardson said: “On Sunday, May 23, we held an Edwardian spring fayre which had lots of stalls and games, a coconut shy, hook-a-duck, Punch and Judy, where we raised £2,400 for the PTA.

“On Wednesday the whole school dressed up in Edwardian costumes and enjoyed an Edwardian day.

“There was an exhibition of photos and memorabilia and around 100 ex-pupils, staff and members of the community came and enjoyed the centenary cake and a tour of the school by some of our year six pupils.

“Finally on Friday we had a picnic at our field on Proffits Lane and enjoyed some maypole dancing.

“We then returned to school for a celebration assembly and birthday cake where we sang some of our favourite songs, including a song from our link school in South Africa called ‘When The Roll Is Called’.

“It was a fantastic week.”
