Explosive shell found in Abbey Square garden

A RUSTING shell has been unearthed in a garden at Abbey Square sparking a bomb scare this morning.

The Royal Logistic Corps Bomb Disposal experts from Dale Barracks, Chester, are in attendance to diffuse the foot long shell, which was found by gardeners working at a house off the square, next to the Cathedral in the City Centre.

Cheshire police spokesman Jason Murray said: “Shortly after 9am on what appeared to be an old shell was found in the grounds of Abbey Square.

“The shell is old, corroded and appear to have been in the ground.

“As a precautionary measure the area has been cordoned off and people in adjoining buildings which overlook the square have been advised to stay away from windows.”
