Prince Edward presents award to Beeston Castle for school visits

A MEDIEVAL Cheshire castle

has been honoured for its educational programmes by the Earl of Essex.

Beeston Castle an English Heritage property, has been presented with a Sandford Award for the 'Discovery Visits' held at the castle.

The awards ceremony took place recently at St George's Hall, Windsor Castle, and was presented by Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

The ‘Discovery Visits' merge hands-on historical interpretation with fun facts and figures and bring history to life for the children taking part.

They are led by specialist educators who know the site inside out. Trained staff and education volunteers encourage children to broaden their knowledge of history and other key subjects, such as maths and science, through challenges and other exciting activities.

Lynne Minett, English Heritage Education Manager for the North commented: “We are extremely pleased to receive this recognition, as English Heritage prides itself on its education offering. It's so rewarding to see the children enjoying their time with us and learning about the history of Beeston Castle through the hands-on activities we offer.”
