Victoria Infant School in Chester celebrates Fairtrade and World Book Day

PUPILS at Victoria Infant School in Chester enjoyed an African adventure when staff organised a host of events for Fairtrade Fortnight and WaterAid.

All year groups participated in the full range of activities, beginning with an African drummer who visited the school to lead the youngsters in a musical extravaganza.

Also calling in was storyteller and author Jeanette Angela Barrett who made World Book Day extra special by entertaining the whole school with some traditional African tales, before working with each class to inspire the writers of the future.

The school also hosted a hugely popular Fairtrade coffee afternoon attended by pupils and their parents, when a mouth-watering array of cakes and biscuits cooked by the children using Fairtrade ingredients were sold, along with Fairtrade goods from visiting city retailers, to raise money for the WaterAid charity.

The WaterAid funds were further topped up to a total of £264.75 by collections of ‘Buckets of Pennies for Buckets of Water’ in each classroom for pupils to make donations, and lessons to help the children consider what life would be like without fresh water at the turn of a tap.
