Overleigh St Mary’s pupils in Handbridge build wall of hope for Haiti

BRICKLAYING has been introduced to the curriculum at Overleigh St Mary’s to raise funds for a good cause.

Pupils at the Handbridge school have built a Wall of Hope to raise cash for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

Teacher Fiona MacSween explains: “We were very shocked by the news of the earthquake which affected Haiti, especially as we knew people who had visited the Dominican Republic.

“I led an assembly to see what we could do and we decided to build a Wall of Hope to symbolise the people having to rebuild their lives.”

Individuals and families made a donation to the appeal and then wrote their names on a brick.

Other pupils took the initiative to raise even more funds.

Joe Stevens-Tatler had a toy sale for his friends and family and his sister Georgia and friend Rachael Crawford raised £200 from a sponsored swim.

Year 6 pupils, who had been studying Macbeth, dressed as Hags for Haiti to raise more cash.

Other children in Year 6 made pencil toppers and origami figures and sold them in exchange for a donation.

The final total raised was £750.
