Chester to host the 2010 World Town Crier Tournament this summer
CHESTER is to host the 2010 World Town Crier Tournament in June which will see thousands of visitors pour into the city providing a huge boost to the local economy.
Organised by Chester Renaissance alongside Chester’s own champion Town Crier, David Mitchell, the event will see as many as 40 town criers arrive for a week-long festival during which there will be three days of fierce competition.
Rita Waters, chief executive of Chester Renaissance, said: “When David first approached Chester Renaissance to support him in this venture I could see straight away the huge impact it would have in our city, bringing both tourists and therefore, tourism spend.
“We have been working with David and our other partners to make sure the event is World Class and delivers a fun and entertaining week-long spectacular for contestants, visitors and residents alike.”
Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Executive Member for Culture and Recreation, Councillor Richard Short says he is delighted to be able to support the event which will provide a welcome boost to the city’s economy.
He said: “With participants travelling from America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand as well as many other European countries this is truly an international event which can only be good for the reputation of our great city. “It will bring in thousands of visitors to the city providing a massive boost to our local economy.”
Chester Town Crier David Mitchell says the competition consists of three rounds taking place before the Saturday, June 19 final – although David, as organiser, is barred from competing himself.
