AMBULANCES will be carrying a new logo to encourage people to consider alternatives to dialling 999.
The region-wide Choose Well campaign aims to encourage the public to consider alternatives to the 999 number and A&E such as phoning NHS Direct, or going to minor injury units, walk-in centres or their GP.
Emergency vehicles will carry the message, Please Keep this Ambulance Free for Emergencies .
The trust receives more than 3,000 999 calls per day and it is estimated that 10-15% are for ailments which would be treated elsewhere.
Director of emergency services, Derek Cartwright said: ‘This isn’t just about reducing the number of calls the trust answers but also about improving patient care and ensuring the public get the right care at the right place.
‘There is little paramedics can do for someone who has had a stiff knee for a few days, other than take them to an accident and emergency unit.
“And like ourselves A&E departments, should also be kept free for urgent conditions which need immediate attention.”
