A CHESTER resident ended the decade by celebrating her 100th birthday.
Gwyneth Morgan, now living in the Kingscourt Nursing Home on Newton Lane, reached the landmark on New Year’s Eve.
She received a telegram card from The Queen and one from secretary of state for work and pensions Yvette Cooper MP.
Liverpool born Mrs Morgan, one of a family of five children, was married to the late George Arthur Morgan from Kelsall, born in 1911 and one of four children, who passed away in 1985.
Younger son John Morgan, also of Newton Lane, says the couple met when his mother was working at Collinsons shoe shop in Eastgate Street and his father was a clerk in the Town Hall.
They married at St Peter’s Church at The Cross in 1937.
At first, they lived in Highfield Road in Blacon, moving to Blacon Point Road where elder son David, who has also passed away, was born in 1938.
Younger son John was born in 1943.
Once married, Mrs Morgan left employment but cared for members of the family.
Mr Morgan continued his career in local government with a period at Hawarden Rural District Council.
He became clerk to Chester Rural District Council in 1949, a post he held until his retirement in 1974.
