THE COURT heard Slack, father of a young child, had been drinking from lunchtime until the incident at 10.45pm.
He was arrested on the night for affray by police who knew nothing of the dramatic events that had preceded their arrival.
Slack was later issued with a penalty notice for disorderly behaviour.
The court heard how he behaved so badly in the police car – trying to toot the horn, reaching for the controls and trying the door handles – that he was also arrested for attempted criminal damage.
Slack later told police in interview he had been so drunk he could not remember any of the events that led to Mr Leffler being fatally injured.
Speaking after the hearing, Detective Inspector Andy Harris, who led the investigation said: “We hope this sentence sends a strong message to those who indulge in excessive drinking, that their actions can have serious implications by destroying the lives of others, and that they will be held responsible.
“Our sympathies are with the family of Martin Leffler and we hope that today’s sentence brings a degree of closure for them.
He added: “I would personally like to thank all those who came forward to assist us with this investigation and in bringing Michael Slack to justice.”
