A VILLAGE primary school has been refused listed building status by English Heritage.
An application was submitted to English Heritage to make Tarporley Primary School, on Park Road a listed building.
The school opened in 1849 and was based in a sandstone building, part of which still exists today.
Representatives from English Heritage visited the school to look at the buildings and assess whether or not it was ofenough interest to be listed.
An English Heritage spokesperson said: “Regrettably, the school has been subject to significant external alterations over time and the interior has been completely modernised. There is little reminder of the original design and all but a few original features survive.
English Heritage decided the building did not possess a high level of ‘intactness’ and did not have the special architectural interest to justify listing it.”
English Heritage will not reveal who made the application to have the building listed, however if the application had succeeded it would have made it harder for the school to be developed, extended or refurbished. The school is currently considered too small and Cheshire West and Chester council are considering how best to develop the site.
